Sexually Harrassed By a Group of Middle School Boys

I am braving grave wrist pain to bring you this blog entry! Okay, perhaps not 'grave pain' but it is seriously uncomfortable. Anyways, so as I'm walking down the street a group of 10 or so middle school aged boys loitering outside of the GS 25 look up and see me, a waegookin female. If I was a Korean female they would have probably gone out of their way to stare at each other, their shoes, the sky, anything but strike up a conversation. But oh no, I got a chorus of 'hi, hello, how are you' and one boy who just kept saying the word 'sex' over and over again. I have a sneaking suspicion that he is responsible for the new graffiti a bit further down the road that says "SEX" on the side of a building. (No pictures...it's alternating between rain, snow and intense wind.) I said a quick hello and ducked into the shop to use the ATM. A few seconds of bliss from the disgusting weather...until all 10 boys pile into the shop and proceed to ask me where I'm from, tell me their names and of course, the sex boy said 'sex' a few more times. I think that counts as mild sexual harassment...or rather, it would in the USA. Oh well.

You aren't in the USA anymore and if this really bothers you perhaps you might want to rethink about staying.

Oh it doesn't bother me, I find it absolutely hilarious! Usually I'm much more chatty with the neighborhood kids but the weather was truly shite today.

This is my second year in Korea...it's not that this sort of stuff annoys me so much as it endlessly entertains me.

Well you have a good additude about it. One or two students is fine but ten is a mob. My comment wasn't meant to be mean or anything, I know this place can we rough on western women.

I hope you can avoid this type of situation in the future, I'm a man but I will usually cross the street if I see the tacky uniform swarm coming.

I guess you have bigger gonads than me, cheers.....

Hard to let go with one of your zingers when the boys probably wouldn't have understood it anyway.

Was it a question or a statement? Maybe he was just trying to begin a conversation by starting with something that he knows every one likes. Maybe next time he will yell "Cake! Cake!"

@Mom...yeah zingers don't work at ALL when you consider language/cultural humor barriers.

@Kyle-you just made my day. If I run into that kid again and he does the same thing I'm just going to pick a random food word and repeat it back at him. HILARIOUS.

I think 'pervert' is more in store.

Hahaha. My co-teacher actually said saying 'monkey' would be a good response and told me how. And I already knew how to say pervert since it sounds a bit like my boyfriend's last name...

Just be careful. Remember South Korea is the rape capital of Asia. Check out my blog at http://www.youseok.wordpress.com I back it up with statistics from Nation master.

I'm always careful! I didn't think that Korea had much crime rate period...
